New York dance photographer: Rioult world premiere On Distant Shores

On Distant Shores, Rioult’s latest world premiere was debuted at the Joyce Theater back in June. I was lucky enough to be able capture it during dress rehearsal. On Distant Shores is a poetic fantasy about Helen of Troy’s imagined relationships with heroes of the a trojan War. My 6 year old thought she was a shark and each man was fish that she was eating. I think either interpretation works.

The dance was full of abandon and intimacy. I found myself moving with the music. Enjoy!

New York Dance Photographer: Shut Up and Dance 2011

A lot of people are now aware of Shut Up and Dance due to the gallery exhibition at TRUST in May. It was really great to see so many people interested in learning more about the one night only dance performance. This year the performance was on May 21st. Yes, the day of rapture. We were all watching the show at 8:00PM, so I guess we’ll all be zombies soon.

I love that the dancers included the rapture and did a dance with that youtube guy that teaches dance moves. It was pretty hilarious.

Moving on with the rest of the night old and new choreographers created some fun and beautiful pieces. Here are a few highlights from the evening.

You have 2 more days to go to the Joyce Theater and see Rioult dance company. Rioult is presenting the much anticipated world premiere of Celestial Tides. Celestial Tides is the third and final installment of his Bach series. I was really excited to have the opportunity to photograph this piece. Rioult’s choreography is beautiful. A gorgeous mix of flowing and quick movement. His movement reflects exactly what you hear in the Bach piece and I found myself almost dancing with them when shooting. The movement is continuous, graceful and circular. It ebbs and flows. Since my background was ballet, I think if I was still dancing now, Rioult would be my dream company.

New York Dance Photographer: Gallery showing at the TRUST Gallery in Philadelphia

Sofia Negron Photography is proud to announce a solo gallery showing of dance photographs from the last 5 years of Shut Up and Dance. The showing will be the entire month of May at TRUST Gallery in Philadelphia. The gallery opening will be held on May 6, 2011 from 6:00-9:00PM at TRUST at 249 Arch Street Philadelphia, PA 19106. During the month of May, the show can be seen Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00AM-6:00PM. It free and open to the public.

These images are more than just pretty dance photographs but a representation of the commitment of a community of artists, volunteers and a non-profit organization to bring life to others and feed their bodies and souls.

In 1993, dancers at the Pennsylvania Ballet wanted to do something to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. They realized the best thing they could do was “shut up and dance”. Every year since, the dancers have partnered with MANNA in presenting a one-night-only performance. For the last 5 years, Sofia Negron has had the honor of photographing this performance.

Especially for people at acute nutritional risk due to life-threatening illness, MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance) prepares and delivers delicious nourishing meals and counsel, empowering individuals to battle illness and improve their quality of life. They provide 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at no charge. Every Shut Up and Dance ticket provides meals for one client.

A photographer for the last 10 years, Sofia Negron loves capturing movement and stories. Sofia not only photographs dancers and other artists, she also tells authentic love stories through her wedding photography. A former dancer herself, Sofia loves to capture the energy, the lines and the very soul of each dancer.

This exhibit will raise awareness for this wonderful organization, pay tribute to the dancers who have participated in these performances, and showcase Sofia’s dance photography work. 100% of the profits generated by the sale of these works during the show will be donated to MANNA.

New York Dance Photographer: Doug Varone and Dancers

As a former professional dancer, I get really excited when I get an opportunity to photograph dance. Being in New York now, there are a ton of dance companies and I was really honored to have the opportunity to photograph Doug Varone and Dancers. This is a small company made up of modern dancers handpicked by Doug Varone. Reading an article about how he picks his dancers, he says he likes to find dancers who have lived, are comfortable in their bodies and can bring a maturity to their dancing, who will bring something to his work, who will make his work better. Each one of these dancers has really beautiful movement quality and timing. It was refreshing to watch modern dancers who move through space freely and still keep the integrity of their technique.

This was the New York premiere of “Chapter from a Broken Novel” performed at the Joyce Theater. “Chapter from a Broken Novel” original score was created by David Van Tieghem.
