New York Dance Photographer: Doug Varone and Dancers

As a former professional dancer, I get really excited when I get an opportunity to photograph dance. Being in New York now, there are a ton of dance companies and I was really honored to have the opportunity to photograph Doug Varone and Dancers. This is a small company made up of modern dancers handpicked by Doug Varone. Reading an article about how he picks his dancers, he says he likes to find dancers who have lived, are comfortable in their bodies and can bring a maturity to their dancing, who will bring something to his work, who will make his work better. Each one of these dancers has really beautiful movement quality and timing. It was refreshing to watch modern dancers who move through space freely and still keep the integrity of their technique.

This was the New York premiere of “Chapter from a Broken Novel” performed at the Joyce Theater. “Chapter from a Broken Novel” original score was created by David Van Tieghem. MANNA and the dancers from PA Ballet: Shut Up and Dance 2010

Celebrating it’s 18th year and my 5th year photographing this event, Shut Up and Dance was fantastic. This is my favorite benefit all year for MANNA. I love the tag line for this year, “We DANCE because food is life” For me, dancing was always my life, it gave me life, feeding my very soul. Food makes life possible. Therefore using dance to raise money for MANNA who in turn feeds people is a perfect solution.

It’s nice to see some new faces mixed in with some of my old favorites. Aranxta Ochoa did another moving performance of Dying Swan. It makes me cry every year.

Meredith Rainey choreographed my favorite piece, “Before the After”.

All the dancers were beautiful and I like that the dancers take chances and risks to choreograph and perform pieces they may not do otherwise. The PA ballet dancers are helping MANNA to raise money but MANNA is helping foster new choreographers and letting dancers show what else they can do.

Musician photos- Tim McGlone and the Turn

A few weeks ago, I went to the National Underground and photographed Tim McGlone and the Turn. I met Tim a few years ago and was really excited to come hear them play and capture some cool pics of them performing. The National Underground is a very small club/bar in the East Village. Downstairs in the basement is a small room with a bar and a stage area with two stage lights. A really bright pink one which illuminates the singer and pretty much nothing else and a red one that lit stage right. The poor keyboardist was jammed behind a post in the dark. It was a typical tiny bar in the village where good and not so good bands play. It was definitely fun and I hope to get to do more of these types of photos. Ultimately, I’d like to follow a band from practice, load in, backstage, performance, studio and everything in between. I really love capturing the whole story and getting to know my subjects. Protect Me, Keep Me, Share Me

I found this youtube video on my friend’s facebook page. Kodak really hits a home run with this commercial. I have been thinking a lot about what photographs really are. More than just images on paper but memories, raw emotion, little time machines. The very last part almost made me cry, it is an old man looking at a photo of his wife and at that moment you see and understand.

Opera Company of Philadelphia

Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story on the Philadelphia Opera Company’s productions of L’enfant et les sortilèges and Gianni Schicchi. I had a chance to photograph the dress rehearsal of L’Enfant and it is really cool. I really love the animation involved, the dancers and of course the vocals are gorgeous. Here is the article with my photo and a few sneak peeks. I recommend going to see this double bill because it is fresh, exciting and performed beautifully. Plus, Gianni Schicchi has one of the most famous, and one of my favorite arias, “O Mio Bebino”
