Now that I have moved back to New York, all my old actor and dancer friends are calling to get headshots. I actually really like it because I can take time with one person and really get to know them. An actor’s headshot is what gets the actor called in for auditions and remembered. A lot of times casting directors and agents get stopped by the way someone looks in their headshot. If they are casting a commercial or a show, it is about the look first. Then when they have the people they like then they check out their resumes and talent. Here in New York where there are so many talented actors, a great headshot can make or break you.

Many years ago, when I was a dancer, I temped at various offices around the city. Sometimes I got lucky and would work at a TV or commercial agency. I was just answering the phones but a lot of times the mail came to me first and they’d say-pull out anyone you think looks interesting and the rest just throw over here. Yeah the lowly secretary was getting a chance to pull out actors from the piles and piles of headshots. I mean how does anyone choose who will be in the next Crest commercial in a sea of talented and beautiful actors/actresses anyway?

Here are some photos I did for a very talented opera and musical theater actress. Rebecca sings with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players and has done lots of off-broadway and regional theater. Rebecca is also branching out into commercial and extra work. Keep an eye out for the new Madonna movie, Rebecca plays a client at Sotheby’s.

First Day of Kindergarten

Today was filled with nervousness and anxiety. Allie has been going to school since she was 2.5 but today marked a big milestone. Kindergarten in a new school that is huge and has big kids all around. I was excited for her but she was much more reserved.

“What if they don’t like me? What if they make fun of me?” “Remember that time when I was little and that girl pushed me down?”

Wow, all of these questions coming from a 5 year old! AND this 5 year old, says hi and talks to strangers on the subway and smiles at everyone and has always had a ton of friends. Going to a new school is a big step for everyone even a 5 year old. I wish I could tell her it gets easier as she gets older but I still ask those same questions every time I go to a networking event or have to meet new people. However, as I think she will find out, once you go in and meet someone it gets easier to talk to other people and you realize everyone else was thinking the same thing before they walked in. I guess you really do learn everything you ever needed to know in kindergarten.

Since moving back to New York, I am doing more actor headshots. These are really fun because I get to spend time getting to know one person. Learning about who they are, what they are searching for, aspiring to, their friends, their family even really bad jokes. Well, I may be the one telling the bad jokes but it is a lot of fun doing actor headshots.

Here are a few oldies but goodies. You may recognize a few people like Tobias Segal: Miracle Worker on Broadway, youngest actor to ever win a Barrymore for his role in Equus and a bunch of other cool roles in NYC and London. You may also recognize Steve Browne who has a lovely singing voice in shows around Philadelphia. Rahsaan Kearns from shows like Hair, A Christmas Carol and other shows.

Gray and Baby T

I love this family! I have been photographing Gray since she was 6 months old (1, 2, 3) , now she is 4!! Time flies. She also has a new baby brother who I could just eat up. Talk about the roundest, chubbiest cheeks and gorgeous blue eyes you have ever seen. It’s fun to see how much gray looks like her mommy and T looks like his daddy. I love getting to spend time capturing families and their day to day lives- I wish I got to do more of it. So, if you have kids or friends with kids tell them to give me a call or even gift them a session. What would be more cherished and needed than pics of your family?

I LOVE this shot. How many siblings just stare at each other? What is going through their minds. Baby T could not take his eyes off of Gray when she was around.

OMG! Look at those crystal blue eyes, chubby cheeks and that drool! He is beautiful!

I also LOVE this photo. What is he thinking? This is the kind of expression you just can’t make happen.
